সকল বিষয়েরই সময় আছে, ও আকাশের  নীচে সমস্ত ব্যাপারের কাল আছে।

সব কিছুরই একটা নির্দিষ্ট সময় আছে। এবং সূর্যের নীচে একটা নির্দিষ্ট সময় সব কিছুই ঘটবে।

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven;

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

শ্রমজীবী অধিক বা অল্প আহার করুক, নিদ্রা তাহার মিষ্ট লাগে; কিন্তু ধনবানের পূর্ণতা তাহাকে নিদ্রা যাইতে দেয় না।

যে ব্যক্তি সারাদিন কঠিন পরিশ্রম করে সে ঘরে ফিরে শান্তিতে ঘুমোয়। সে সামান্য কিছু খেল বা না খেয়ে থাকল সেটা বিষয় নয়। কিন্তু যে ধনী ব্যক্তি সে সম্পদ রক্ষার দুশ্চিন্তায় রাতে ভাল করে ঘুমোতে পারে না।

Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.

The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

সে মাতৃগর্ব্ভ হইতে উলঙ্গ আইসে; যেমন আইসে তেমনি উলঙ্গই চলিয়া যায়; পরিশ্রম করিলেও সে যাহা সঙ্গে করিয়া লইয়া যাইতে পারে, এমন কিছুই নাই।

এক জন মানুষ খালি হাতে মাতৃগর্ভ থেকে জন্ম নেয়। আর সে যখন মারা যায়, সে একই ভাবে রিক্ত অবস্থায় বিদায় নেয়। সে ফল লাভের জন্য কঠিন পরিশ্রম করে কিন্তু মারা গেলে কোন কিছুই সঙ্গে নিয়ে যেতে পারে না।

As he came from his mother's womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand.

উৎকৃষ্ট তৈল অপেক্ষা সুখ্যাতি ভাল, এবং জন্মদিন অপেক্ষা মরণদিন ভাল।

ভাল সুগন্ধের চেয়ে সুনাম শ্রেয়। এক জন মানুষের যে দিন জন্ম হয় সেই দিনের থেকে তার মৃত্যুদিন ভাল।

A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.

ভোজের গৃহে যাওয়া অপেক্ষা বিলাপ-গৃহে যাওয়া ভাল, কেননা তাহা সকল মনুষ্যের শেষগতি, এবং জীবিত লোক তাহাতে মনোনিবেশ করিবে।

উৎসবের গৃহে যাওয়ার চেয়ে শোকের গৃহে যাওয়া ভাল। কেন? কারণ শোকের গৃহে লোকরা সত্যিই জানবে যে সব মানুষই মরণশীল।

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.

হাস্য হইতে মনস্তাপ ভাল, কারণ মুখের বিষণ্ণতায় হৃদয় প্রসন্ন হয়।

আনন্দের চেয়ে দুঃখ শ্রেয়। কেন? যখন আমরা দুঃখ পাই তখন আমাদের হৃদয় শুদ্ধ হয়।

জ্ঞানবানদের হৃদয় বিলাপগৃহে থাকে, কিন্তু হীনবুদ্ধিদের হৃদয় আমোদ-গৃহে থাকে। 

যে জ্ঞানী সে মৃত্যুর কথাও ভাবে কিন্তু মূর্খ শুধুই আমোদ-প্রমোদের কথা চিন্তা করে।

কেননা যেমন হাঁড়ীর নীচে কাঁটার শব্দ, তেমনি হীনবুদ্ধির হাস্য; ইহাও অসার।

মূর্খের অট্টহাসি হল পাত্রের নীচে জ্বলন্ত কাঁটার মতো যা এতই তাড়াতাড়ি পুড়ে যায় যে পাত্রটি উত্তপ্ত পর্যন্ত হয় না। এটাও অসার।

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fools; this also is vanity.

উপদ্রব জ্ঞানবানকে ক্ষিপ্ত করে, এবং উৎকোচ বুদ্ধি নষ্ট করে।

এক জন জ্ঞানী যদি কারো কাছ থেকে যথেষ্ট অর্থ পায় তবে সে তার জ্ঞানও ভুলে যায়। অর্থ তার বোধশক্তি নষ্ট করে দেয়।

Surely oppression drives the wise into madness, and a bribe corrupts the heart.

কার্য্যের আরম্ভ হইতে তাহার অন্ত ভাল, এবং গর্ব্বিতাত্মা অপেক্ষা ধীরাত্মা ভাল।

কোন কিছু নতুন করে আরম্ভ করবার চেয়ে তাকে শেষ করা ভাল। অধৈর্য্য ও অহঙ্কারী হওয়ার চেয়ে শান্ত ও ধৈর্য্যশীল হওয়া ভাল।

তোমার আত্মাকে সত্বর বিরক্ত হইতে দিও না, কেননা হীনবুদ্ধি লোকদেরই বক্ষঃ বিরক্তির আশ্রয়।

হঠাৎ রেগে ওঠা উচিৎ নয়। কারণ রাগ করা মূর্খামি।

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

অতি ধার্ম্মিক হইও না, ও আপনাকে অতিশয় জ্ঞানবান দেখাইও না; কেন আপনাকে নষ্ট করিবে?

বেশী জ্ঞানী বা বেশী মূর্খ কোনটাই হবে না। কেন আত্মহনন করবে?

Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?

অতি দুষ্ট হইও না, অজ্ঞানও হইও না; তোমার সময় না হইতে কেন মরিবে?

কখনও খুব ভালও হবে না বা খুব খারাপও হবে না। কেন তুমি তোমার অন্তিম সময়ের আগে মারা যাবে?

Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?

যে খাত খনন করে, সে তাহার মধ্যে পড়িবে; ও যে ব্যক্তি বেড়া ভাঙ্গিয়া ফেলে, সর্পে তাহাকে কামড়াইবে।

যে ব্যক্তি গর্ত খোঁড়ে সে নিজেই গর্তে পড়ে যেতে পারে। যে ব্যক্তি তার শক্তি দিয়ে একটি দেওয়াল ভেঙে ফেলতে পারে সে দেওয়ালের অপর দিকে লুকিয়ে থাকা সাপের কামড়ে মারা যেতে পারে।

He who digs a pit will fall into it, and a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.

He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

যে ব্যক্তি প্রস্তর সরায়, সে তাহাতেই ব্যথা পাইবে; ও যে ব্যক্তি কাষ্ঠ চিরে, সে তাহাতে বিপদ্ গ্রস্ত হইবে।

যে ব্যক্তি বিশাল পাথর সরায় সে পাথরের আঘাতে আহত হতে পারে। যে ব্যক্তি গাছ কাটে সেই গাছগুলি তার ওপরেই পড়তে পারে।

He who quarries stones is hurt by them, and he who splits logs is endangered by them.

Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

জ্ঞানবানের মুখনির্গত বাক্য অনুগ্রহজনক, কিন্ত হীনবুদ্ধির নিজ ওষ্ঠ তাহাকে গ্রাস করে।

জ্ঞানী মানুষের কথায় খ্যাতি আসে। কিন্তু মূর্খের কথা ধ্বংস ডেকে আনে।

The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume him.

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
